Papers of George Metcalf include deeds to land in Wrentham and Hubbardston, Mass. and other legal papers; reports, charges, and a church covenant relating to grievances brought by Metcalf and others against the West Parish of Wrentham and Rev. Caleb Barnum regarding his religious doctrines; and papers relating to his duties as a town officer. Also included are a few Revolutionary War documents, including a letter concerning troops from Cape Francois (Haiti); correspondence between Oliver Wendell and George Hayley of London concerning merchandise accounts of Edmund Quincy 3rd and others; and a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Bartlett (1901) concerning a meeting in Oyster Bay, N.Y.

Church gathered in 1738 as West Parish Church (also known as Second Church); in 1778 reorganized as First Congregational Church of Franklin with the reorganization and incorporation of that town; in 1938 a storm destroyed the building of the First Baptist Church (organized in 1868) and the Baptists were invited to worship with the First Congregational Church; the two churches were federated in 1941 becoming the Franklin Federated Church.
